The future Russian writer, editor, journalist and public figure Pavel Petrovich Bazhov (1879-1950) was born in the village of Sysertsky Zavod near Yekaterinburg. Collecting material for future works, he wrote down songs, ditties, charms and local legends he heard. Bazhov wrote a lot about the military history of the Urals and about the life of the Ural factories. In 1936, his first Ural tales were published, and three years later the collection "Malachite Box" was published. Initially, the collection consisted of only fourteen tales, but new ones were added later. These tales were independent literary works based on Ural folklore. They reflected the life and beliefs of miners and craftsmen of the Urals, there were bright fairy-tale images of unprecedented, majestic, and sometimes sinister creatures. The collection was loved by readers and brought wide fame to the author.
