We present an anthology of Dutch fairy tales, compiled from four rare editions of the 19th – early 20th centuries, in which the oral traditions of the inhabitants of the “lower lands” – the territory roughly corresponding to the modern Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg – are magically intertwined.
Of the thirty fairy tales from the land of tulips, storks and mills included in our collection, only six were retold in Russian in 1893 by the St. Petersburg translator A. N. Galibin, the rest were published in English. We translated these tales into Russian especially for our publication, striving to make them accessible to today's young readers. On the pages of this book, boys and girls will meet not only their old acquaintances - mermaids, fairies and gnomes, but also heroes who are not found in the fairy tales of other peoples - Sinterklaas and his companion Black Pete, the Queen of the Swamps, the lord of ice Uller, his grandson the mischievous Stum and many other amazing characters. The publication is decorated with works by Dutch artists, including such outstanding masters as Rembrandt van Rijn, Anthony van Dyck, Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Gerrit Dou, Paulus Potter, Michael Sweerts, Gerard Terborch, Jan Schenkman, as well as illustrations by the famous Belgian artist and poet Jean de Boscher, which extremely subtly convey the spirit of Dutch fairy tales.
