The authors of this book offer to look at the events of the twenties of the 20th century through the eyes of people representing various strata of post-revolutionary society - both famous figures of science and culture and ordinary citizens of the young Soviet state. The reader will witness how a twenty-year-old student of the Mining Academy, Alexander Fadeev, trying to keep warm, burns papers of an industrial syndicate; an aspiring composer, Dmitri Shostakovich, works part-time as a cinematographer; a philosopher, Nikolai Berdyaev, rejected by the new authorities, packs his suitcase to leave his homeland forever; and the ideologist of cultural policy, Anatoly Lunacharsky, defends his wife from the attacks of the Soviet press. Only through the prism of a private view, through reference to documents of personal origin - diaries, letters, memoirs - is it possible to truly understand the depth of the changes that occurred during this pivotal decade in the social order of the country, in the consciousness and worldview of the people who inhabited it.
