The poetry translations of Boris Leonidovich Pasternak, the greatest poet of the twentieth century, Nobel Prize winner, have long since become "a fact of Russian poetry" and are part of his artistic world as milestones, to some extent defining his own creative path as well. Among the poets to whom Boris Pasternak turned as a translator were Shakespeare and Goethe, Shelley and Keats, Verlaine, Rilke, Petőfi and others. According to Pasternak's thought, translation should be a self-sufficient artistic work. It is justified only when it conveys the spirit of the original and gives the impression of "life, not diction": "The correspondence of the text is a bond too weak to give the translation expediency. Such translations fail to live up to their promise. Their pale retellings give no clue to the main aspect of the subject they undertake to reflect - its power."
