The collection "Legends, Fairy Tales and Myths" is an unexpected look at the work of N. Leskov. The proposed book is composed of Christological, mystical works of the writer, performing the task of "humanizing the Gospel doctrine" and resurrect the canons of early Christianity. They have rarely been republished and have not yet been properly appreciated by literary historians and readers. There are in them echoes of Old Russian "walks", and tales of miraculous icons, and reviews, and stories and parables. The author appears as a singer of universal harmony and peace, telling about such best manifestations of a Christian as straightforwardness, fearlessness, keen conscientiousness, inability to reconcile with evil, righteousness, compassion and love. Contemporaries highly appreciated Leskov as an unsurpassed expert on Russian characters and psychology, Fyodor Dostoevsky dubbed his creative gift "universal responsiveness," and Igor Severyanin already in the twentieth century proclaimed Leskov a "proselytized genius".
