Alfred Tennyson is one of the most brilliant poets of the Victorian era. While the Brontë sisters, Elizabeth Gaskell and Charles Dickens represent the Victorian era in prose, Tennyson, more than anyone else, expressed it in poetry. It has long been observed that, had that era not been called the Victorian era, it might well have borne Alfred Tennyson's name. In amazingly picturesque and musical poems, he embodied the ideas, dreams, aspirations and values of his contemporaries, although he turned in his subjects to distant centuries: to antiquity and to the legends of King Arthur. This edition includes Tennyson's most famous works - "Royal Idylls", "Ulysses", "The Lotophagi", "The Death of Arthur" and others. The cycle "Royal Idylls" is printed in the translation of Olga Chyumina, which saw the light in 1903-1904 and won high praise from critics. Olga Chyumina was not only the first, but until recently the only translator who introduced Russian readers to the main work of Tennyson.
