This edition presents a verse translation of the Third and Fourth Books of Edmund Spenser's great poem, "The Faerie Queene." The protagonist, Britomart, a chaste warrior maiden, performs numerous knightly deeds during her search for the knight Artegall, with whom she fell in love after seeing his image in the magic mirror of her father, King Ryence of the Britons. According to the sorcerer Merlin's prophecy, Britomart must find her beloved and win his heart.
Spenser vividly depicts the poem's many characters: knights and beautiful ladies, cruel giants, witches, and wizards. Among them are Prince Arthur and the Knight of the Red Cross, the beautiful twin sisters Amoretta and Belphebe, and the beautiful Florimel, who, after numerous abductions, is reunited with her beloved Marinellus. The poet vividly and vividly describes knightly tournaments, chases, battles, love affairs, and abductions.
A summary of the first two books is also provided for a coherent understanding of the poem. The book also includes a "Chronicle of the Life of Edmund Spenser" and the story of the creation of "The Faerie Queene."
