The Book of Mountains and Seas is a unique atlas of continental China. The full almanac is very extensive, but for this edition the compilers selected the most interesting and illustrative gods, heroes, demons and beasts from the ancient canon. Each of the fantastic creatures comes to life thanks to the incomparable illustrations of the artist Chen Siyu and the accessible explanations of the great interpreter of the Book from his youth, Sun Jiankun. The album is based on a woodcut edition of the Book, prepared around 1180, during the Song Dynasty. The compilers' explanations for each entry go back to the comments of the famous Chinese historian Tan Qixiang.
