Japanese poetry, graceful, terse, and so unlike the work of Western poets, is a unique phenomenon. Many experts believe that the Silver Age (the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century) is the period of the highest flowering of Japanese verse. The present anthology, prepared by the well-known orientalist and translator of Japanese poetry Alexander Dolin, includes works by the major poets of the Silver Age (including such celebrated writers as Ryunosuke Akutagawa and Natsume Soseki). The book is complemented by extensive introductory articles that recreate the panorama of the numerous poetic schools and trends of the Silver Age.
