The relationship between cinema and feminism has been full of contradictions ever since both phenomena gained prominence in Western culture. From the perspective of feminism, cinema — the embodied child of Western patriarchal culture, the epitome of masculine thinking. From a cinematic perspective, woman — a desirable subject for filmmaking. Through the intersection of these two perspectives, cinema becomes a site for feminist debates and their explorations, actively shaped over decades. Drawing on a wide range of works, Tatiana Kruvko and Valeria Kosyakova analyze current strategies of interaction between cinema and feminist theories and practices of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The choice of films is dictated by the basic aspects that feminist criticism invariably addresses: representation of corporeality, gender politics, power ambitions, identity politics, otherness, and posthumanism. Using the selected films, the authors find reflections of key concepts of femtheory in cinema and show how cinema has highlighted the internal contradictions of the women's movement. Tatiana Kruvko — culturologist, film researcher, guest lecturer at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, author of articles and lectures on the history and theory of feminism and cinema. Valeria Kosyakova — candidate of cultural studies, associate professor at the Russian State University "Higher School of European Cultures", founder of the center "Punctum", researcher of visual culture.
