Emigration is an ancient phenomenon, having experienced its peak of poeticization during the First World War and been greatly romanticized by Wassily Kandinsky, Ivan Bunin, and Feodor Chaliapin. Leaving one's homeland is never easy – it is a tremendous test of character, a certain fracture and shift in one's destiny, a challenge one poses both to oneself and to the world. The greatest artists of the early 20th century and the present day have all experienced emigration, and Dina Rubina, whose work has become an undisputed tuning fork of Russian literature at the end of the century, has not escaped it. In this book, the author has specially collected stories that, in one way or another, relate to the theme of finding a new land and leaving behind the old. They contain humor, sadness, irony, and compassion, embracing all who have just experienced it or who are about to experience it. The experience of emigration cannot be universal, and yet, when conveyed by a great artist, it has the power to help and support. This is precisely why this book was created.
