At the center of this sometimes shocking, harsh, and painful book is a woman. The heroine, a parachutist and hot air balloon pilot in her youth, has experienced a personal tragedy and is forced to take up a completely different profession in a different country, as if through a looking glass: now she's a cosmetologist living in New York City.

A whole host of strange characters pass before her eyes. Due to her profession, the heroine encounters fantastical, yet almost familiar to the modern world, "gender reversals," and the discouraging and sometimes repulsive aspects of society.

And, strangely enough, from this garland of what the heroine calls "cripples," emerges a grotesque, tragic, insignificant, and simultaneously sublime image of modern love.
