A talented person is always versatile. In this collection of poems, Andrei Voznesensky is presented as a lyricist, a romantic with a tragically tormented soul, who cares for people and the world around us. His poetic insights arise amidst the everyday, but they are all the more valuable for it. The country is rapt with his extraordinary poems, and his performances, even as late as the 1960s, drew thousands of spectators. But most importantly, Voznesensky was a true reformer of Russian verse, a subtle and insightful lyricist, a passionate, enthusiastic poet—a symbol of the Soviet "thaw" and a master of metaphor. It seems nothing escaped his observant eye and keen ear, attuned to the "ninety percent of music" that makes up every person. "He is a magician!" wrote Ernst Neizvestny about Andrei Voznesensky. "A poet and an artist are magicians by their very purpose and destiny." They possess a primordial knowledge of the true names of things and are able to call them out of nothingness, clothe them in form." The collection presents selected poems by the poet from the 1960s and 1970s—for those readers who, following the poet, "seek not simulacra, but the original."
