Today Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) is considered one of the most beloved, talented and quoted American poets. At the same time, Emily spent her entire life in complete obscurity in the small town of Amherst (Massachusetts), almost never publishing, and her entire enormous literary legacy - one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five poems - was discovered in a chest of drawers after her death.
Concise, sensual, innovative, unparalleled among her contemporaries, Dickinson's poetry was ahead of its time for a long time - it was truly appreciated only in the middle of the 20th century. The poems are characterized by vivid images and associations, sincerity and spontaneity, unusual syntax with an abundance of dashes and the richest alliterations, and the focus is on eternal themes - nature, love, the mystery of life and death.
This edition includes poems translated by Vera Markova and Grigory Kruzhkov. And as G. Kruzhkov wrote, Dickinson’s poems deserve to be read in their entirety, to be surprised and to make new discoveries.
