Aesopian language in Russian literature (modern period)

The Aesopian language is a means of circumventing censorship and conveying to the addressee what cannot be said in plain text. Russian literature treated Aesopian language as an unfortunate necessity, so it developed a huge arsenal of circumlocutions: metaphors, innuendos, anachronisms, and parodies. The first published text of the dissertation by Lev Losev, a well-known poet and literary scholar, is an excursion into the history of the question, a detailed classification of "Aesopian" techniques and an analysis of numerous examples from Soviet literature. Among the heroes of this book are Daniil Kharms, Evgeny Shvarts, Arkady Belinkov, Evgeny Yevtushenko, and the Strugatsky brothers. The book is preceded by an introductory article by Alexandra Arkhipova, who examines the Aesopian language from the perspective of anthropology, folkloristics, and twentieth-century history. Lev Losev (1937-2009)-one of the leading poets of the "philological school," literary critic, memoirist, biographer of Joseph Brodsky, and lecturer in Russian literature at Dartmouth College (USA).
