The book includes diary entries of Alice Vladimirovna Bank (1906-1984), an outstanding Byzantine, a long-term employee of the State Hermitage, who was in charge of the Byzantine and Middle East sector. The diary is devoted mainly to the author’s years of study at the Petrograd/Leningrad University (1923–1928). It was a time of great change: the communization of the university, the expulsion of a number of academic courses from the faculty program, the university “cleansing”. A. V. Bank also describes the transformations that took place in those years in the Public Library, where her father worked, the history of the first arrest of the famous Russian culturologist N. P. Antsiferov, relations with the university teacher A. P. Smirnov, historian, art critic, archaeologist. On these pages, the reader is presented with a unique testimony of the era - a document of amazing human purity and indisputable dignity.
