The beginning of the 2000s, a southern mining town. 15-year-old Marina and 17-year-old Zhenya are trying to escape from the mundane and find themselves in this world. Marina, faced with unhappy love and betrayal by her friend, seeks salvation in the Mormon church. Zhenya, not understanding what he wants from life, tries to go with the flow of muddy waters. Their destinies are connected, each faces their dark side and each undergoes initiation. It seems that the city is always dark, but someone will find a way to turn on the light...

"The Day God Died" is a striking example of southern Gothic based on Russian material: the Rostov region acquires almost mythological features in Chufistova's novel. This is a story of growing up, a story of accepting oneself and one's destiny in the scenery of a hot provincial town, intonationally balancing between Harper Lee and Vera Bogdanova.
