The monograph reviews the biology of coronaviruses, the epidemiology of SARS-CoV-2, the reasons why this virus has become pandemic, and the mechanisms leading to the severe course of COVID-19. Special attention is paid to such little-known for Russian physicians manifestations of COVID-19 as: the phenomena of antibody-dependent enhancement of infection and antigenic imprinting; autoimmune responses to the virus; pathogenic priming; specific toxicity of the virus spike protein (S-protein); COVID-19 vaccine-induced mimicry syndrome; possible connection of S-protein with prion diseases and neurodegeneration. The monograph fills the gaps in knowledge on the immunology of epidemic, infectious and postvaccinal processes, which, for reasons unknown to the author, are absent in domestic textbooks for medical universities. The monograph is intended for a wide range of readers. It will be especially useful for senior students of biological and medical faculties of universities, infectious diseases physicians, epidemiologists and health care organizers.
