In his famous work "What is Life?", which in many ways shaped the future development of several scientific fields, Schrödinger also turned to a subject at the intersection of biology, physics and chemistry and tried to consider the living cell and the organism as a whole as a physical object. He wanted to understand whether living matter obeyed standard physical laws, how quantum theory fit with genetics, and what constitutes life in terms of the "behavior" of living objects. The collection also includes Schrödinger's lecture "Consciousness and Matter," in which he reflects on a topic that will remain relevant for a long time to come — what is consciousness? And what is a world that is not illuminated by the light of consciousness? A game without an audience, unknowable to anyone, and therefore non-existent? In this short but surprisingly capacious work, the author has managed to combine the incongruous — rigorous scientific approach and entertaining fiction. Schrödinger offers us to look at the phenomenon of consciousness from many different angles, and this study turns out to be more fascinating than any detective story.
