In everyone's life, there are days that are similar to one another and dreamlike dreams that are overwhelming at night; routine and adventure; responsibilities and dreams. Dreams end upon waking, but sometimes they are remembered and seem to carry over into reality. Dreams don't come true often, but how dreary we would be without them. This is the subject of "The Ballad of the Little Tugboat", first published in 1962 in the Leningrad magazine "Koster". For Joseph Brodsky, who was then twenty-two years old, this publication was the first and for almost a quarter of a century one of the very few in his homeland. It seems that Brodsky had a premonition of the trials that lay ahead of him. The heart of the harbor tugboat, who seems to forbid himself to dream, belongs to the ocean, and the dream itself comes true near him - in the port, on the embankments of the Neva, outside the window. And in the end it takes him away with it, far away. The young poet and even more so his little hero do not speak about it directly; for them it seems to be only a guess, the visual features of which are given by the artist Kasia Denisevich.
