Thanks to the work of talented translators, Alice's adventures in Wonderland and Looking-Glass have long since become literary classics for Russian readers. In England, the first of these two books, written by mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who is now better known by his literary pseudonym as Lewis Carroll, was published in 1865. Readers were attracted not only by the amazing adventures of the protagonist, but also by the magnificent illustrations by English artist John Tenniel. The text of "Alice in Wonderland" is given in the translation of Alexandra Nikolaevna Rozhdestvenskaya. Her translation of Carroll, entitled Alice's Adventures in a Magical Land, was first published in 1908-1909 in the journal Zadushchevnoe Slovo (Vol. 49, Nos. 1-7, 9-21, 22-33). It is considered the first translation of Carroll's story into Russian. In 1911, under the title "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," it was reprinted in the "Golden Library" series at the Wolf printing house in St. Petersburg. "Alice in Looking-Glass" is given in the translation of V. A. Azov (literary pseudonym of Vladimir Alexandrovich Ashkinazi). His translation of Alice in the Looking Glass remains a significant contribution to Russian culture.
