The author of this book is the Prussian military commander and historian Carl Philipp Gottlieb von Clausewitz (1780–1831), who transferred to the Russian army in 1812. A participant in many wars, Clausewitz devoted much time to analyzing and studying military campaigns. He wrote a number of military history works, later compiled into his major work, "On War," which earned him a well-deserved reputation as an outstanding military theorist and philosopher of war.

This edition includes one of Clausewitz's works, dedicated to the War of 1812. The description of the campaign plans, its beginning, a general overview of the events of the 1812 campaign in Russia, and French losses are presented by the author in his characteristic style – clear, critical, and utilizing factual material and statistical data.
