This book includes two works by the English writer and renowned adventure writer Thomas Mayne Reid: the celebrated novel "The Headless Horseman" (1865–1866), which brought fame to its creator, and the novella "The Sea-Wolf" (1859). Filled with the impressions and moods of the author's youth spent in the United States, this romantic story of the noble Texas mustang rider Maurice Gerald and the beautiful plantation owner's daughter Louisa Poindexter, whose love is thwarted by the machinations of an envious man and the sinister secret of the headless horseman who terrorizes the inhabitants of the savannah, continues to captivate readers both in Mayne Reid's homeland and around the world.

The hero of "The Sea Wolf," twelve-year-old Philip Forster, is drawn by a boyish desire for travel and adventure to the Inca, a merchant ship bound for Peru from England. He boards the ship unbeknownst to the crew, hiding in the hold and buried alive among bales of cargo, crates, and barrels. Young Philip is forced to wage a constant struggle for survival—overcoming thirst, hunger, loneliness, fear of the dark, seasickness, and ship's rats. He must use all his knowledge, skills, and wits to fight his way to freedom.

The books are published with classic illustrations by Nikolai Kochergin ("The Headless Horseman") and Leon Bennett ("The Sea Wolf").
