This collection presents, for the first time in Russian, translations of twenty documents illustrating the issue of the so-called Milanese inheritance following the extinction of the Sforza dynasty of Milanese dukes in 1535 with the death of its last legitimate representative, Francesco II Maria Sforza. Although the Duchy of Milan, as a fief of the Holy Roman Empire, returned to the authority of its overlord, Emperor Charles V, its fate remained uncertain. This is evidenced by the letters of Charles V, the reports of the Keeper of the Seals, Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle, the materials of the discussions in the State Council of the Spanish Monarchy, and others. They reveal the full intensity of Charles V's struggle for the Milanese inheritance with King Francis I of France, not only from a dynastic but also from a geopolitical perspective, demonstrating the enormous importance of the Duchy of Milan in European politics in the mid-16th century, which ultimately fell to the emperor's son, Prince Philip (the future King Philip II of Spain).
