This publication is the first Russian translation of a book of essays by Edmond (1822–1896) and Jules (1830–1870) de Goncourt, dedicated to outstanding 18th-century French masters—Watteau, Chardin, Boucher, Latour, Greuze, Fragonard, and others—whose work fell into oblivion in the first half of the 19th century.
The Goncourt brothers were contemporaries of the Impressionists, but these fine connoisseurs of past art were not particularly impressed by the new movements. Their sympathies lay with 18th-century painting. In the work of their favorite artists, the Goncourts valued an interest in private life, intimacy and naturalness, a rejection of academic pomposity and rigidity, and an ability to "catch life on the fly." The Goncourts contrasted the light, silvery iridescence of their canvases with the dull "brown sauce" of academic painting of the era. They admire Chardin's robust mastery and Boucher's frivolous virtuosity, Watteau's melancholic contemplation and Fragonard's "overflowing imagination," Greuze's "pictorial theater," and La Tour's character portraits.
