1555, England. The country is ruled by Bluebeard's daughter, Bloody Mary, also known as Mary I Tudor. Rejecting the precepts of her father, Henry VIII, who had six wives, Mary returns England to the fold of Catholicism. Her glorious ascension to the throne was marked by executions and burnings. It's no wonder that the country is in disarray, anything but order. By force of circumstance, a young nobleman, Francis Claudius, enters the service of the royal chancellor and is sent on a secret mission to the Netherlands. The young man doesn't like this assignment. A Protestant at heart and a rebel by nature, he decides to quietly turn away. But it's not to be. A cunning and dangerous enemy is already on his trail and is pursuing him.

The latest volume of "Masters of Adventure" includes the novel "The Swallow and the Sword," by the English writer Stanley Wyman. The books of this modest "Shropshire lad," who lived at the turn of the 20th century and earned the title of "Prince of the Romantics" even during his lifetime, were read by the likes of Stevenson and Sabatini, Agatha Christie, and Graham Greene. This edition includes two sets of illustrations from the magazine and book editions of Wyman's novel.
