William Henry Davies (1871–1940) was a celebrated Welsh poet and writer of the common people, a "professional" tramp who spent many years wandering and earning a living through odd jobs. "The Autobiography of a Supertramp" (1908) brought the author resounding literary success, captivating even venerable writers: Bernard Shaw responded to "Supertramp" with a vivid essay. The book was written in just six weeks and encompassed six years of his vagabond life. The action takes place on both sides of the Atlantic—in England, Ireland, and America. Davies reveals to the reader an anti-world: a life beyond the classical boundaries and the need to conform to the laws of society. The hero's adventures take place between 1893 and 1899, yet the key events of that time seem to pass him by. The tramp lives outside the news and politics. His main concerns are finding a place to sleep, food, drink, shoes, and clothing. His greatest value is the freedom to wander wherever he chooses. Davis's "Autobiography" anticipated many 20th-century artistic phenomena: George Orwell's travelogues, the Beat movement—particularly Kerouac's, and V. Erofeev's "Moscow-Petushki," and it gave the rock band Supertramp its name. It remains relevant as an example of escapist literature. This is the first time it has been published in Russian.
