Three founders of Greek tragedy. Aeschylus the aristocrat. Sophocles the strategist. Euripides the unlucky in love. Myths, legends, and history. Gods, kings, and heroes. Even millennia later, these works remain popular...

This collection includes the major tragedies of renowned ancient playwrights: Aeschylus's "The Persians," "Agamemnon," "The Eumenides," and "Prometheus Bound," Sophocles's "Antigone," "Oedipus Rex," and "Electra," and Euripides's "Medea," "Hippolytus," "The Bacchae," and "Iphigenia at Aulis."

In "Antigone," a determined young woman opposes King Creon's will to bury her brother, a traitor to their homeland. "Medea" tells the story of a woman thirsting for terrible revenge after being betrayed by her once-beloved Argonaut. And in "Prometheus Bound," Zeus the Thunderer subjects the mightiest Titan to terrible suffering for a secret that could spell the end of all the Olympian gods...

Iconic ancient tragedies have repeatedly inspired directors to create feature-length films. For example, in 1967, Italian Pier Paolo Pasolini presented his vision of "Oedipus Rex." And in 1988, "Medea" was adapted for the screen by the infamous Danish director Lars von Trier—creator of "Nymphomaniac" and "Dancer in the Dark."
