The last decade of the 18th century, somewhere in northern Scotland. By a twist of fate and the crooked wheels of a sluggish stagecoach, two chance travelers—the mysterious and reserved Mr. Lovel, who's clearly holding something back, and the restless, quick-talking antiquarian Mr. Oldbuck—become friends.
