These memoirs, long ago included in the "golden fund" of German memoirs about the war on the Eastern Front, are a true confession of a Wehrmacht officer. Colonel Luitpold Steidle (1898-1984) fought against the Red Army from June 22, 1941 until the surrender at Stalingrad, where he commanded the 767th Grenadier Regiment of the 376th Infantry Division (376th Infanterie-Division). In his book, he told in great detail about the invasion of the USSR, the heaviest battles of 1941-1942, the brutal battle for Stalingrad, how around the army of Paulus closed the ring of encirclement and how the German troops painfully "boiled" in the Stalingrad "cauldron".
"Around six o'clock in the morning, the entire area is lightning filled with the rapidly increasing thunder of guns. Soon reports come from the front line, and I with my adjutant hurry to the observation post, from which there is a wide view across the uplands and valleys. Half-darkness still reigns. The explosions rattle incessantly. The thunder of the guns echoes along the entire floodplain of the river, from north to west, resembling a broad thunder front. Without waiting for instructions from division headquarters, I give the order to prepare for battle. Everything suggests that there will be a big Soviet offensive from all the bridgeheads on this side of the Don. Thus heralds the beginning of the Red Army's operation, which will surpass everything that has been so far..."
