Major-General of the Separate Corps of Gendarmes Alexander Ivanovich Spiridovich was a convinced monarchist, gave a lot of effort to the struggle against revolutionary radicals and presented his experience in two books united by the theme "Revolutionary Movement in Russia": "The Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party" and "The Party of Socialist-Revolutionaries and its Predecessors." In 1905 he was seriously wounded by a terrorist. After recovering from his injury, Spiridovich was appointed head of the palace guard. He was responsible for the personal safety of the sovereign and members of his family. But the interest in political investigation did not leave the general. Of particular concern was the activity of the party of socialist-revolutionaries, who made terror the main means of their struggle. Data on the activities of revolutionary organizations, set out in the works of Spiridovich, were transferred by him to the security department and published for official use by the staff. However, this is not an instruction manual or an analytical note. It is an authentic, emotionally colored narrative of the revolution, written by a man "from the other side of the barricades".
