"IN&OZ" is a novel by writer and media theorist Steve Tomasula about labor and art, design and engineering, hope and the impossibility of creative fulfillment. The conceptual framework of this parable is defined by two borderlands: OZ—a place of refinement and unearthed ideals, where value is determined by demand—and IN—a hub of filth, trash, and a working class condemned to pass on their craft from generation to generation. This fantasy world is inhabited by characters whose names reflect their functions: the Mechanic, the Composer, the Designer, the Poet/Sculptor, and the Photographer. The characters' loneliness brings them together to escape their predetermined roles, and they seek ways to change in a world divided between endless reproduction and slow decay. A mechanic finds beauty in the mechanics of a motor, a photographer transforms his apartment into a camera obscura, and a poet realizes himself through writing technical documentation—each person brings their own poetics of creativity, and they must all intersect to understand more about themselves and the world around them.

Steve Tomasula is an American writer, critic, and editor whose work, using visual and narrative techniques, rethinks the structure and form of the novel as a medium, exploring themes of art in the age of reproducibility, genetic revolution, and the manipulation of nature. He is a PhD professor of English at the University of Notre Dame and a scholar of contemporary avant-garde literature.
