Boris Vasiliev's stories "Tomorrow Was the War" and "The Dawns Here Are Quiet..." are quite different in plot but very similar in mood: tragic yet full of faith in victory. "Tomorrow Was the War" tells not so much of the war itself as of its premonition, as it is experienced by ninth-graders in a small town. Against the backdrop of ordinary youthful loves and disputes, the drama of the era unfolds: arrests, slander, bureaucratic indifference, and fervent faith in the Party's cause.

"The Dawns Here Are Quiet..." explores a theme rare in war fiction—the fate of women in war. The story's heroines are very young female anti-aircraft gunners who, together with their commander, detain a detachment of fascist saboteurs.

The illustrations by renowned graphic artist Klim Lee are imbued with tenderness and love for the girls forced to become soldiers both in the battle against the fascists and in the struggle against the system.
