The novel by Nikolai Korneevich Chukovsky tells about the pilots of the squadron that took part in the defense of Leningrad, about the residents of the besieged city. Teacher Marya Sergeyevna and Senior Lieutenant Serov, Major Lunin, the commander of the Baltic Fleet squadron Captain Rassokhin, young Leningraders Sonya and Slava - the interweaving of their destinies, the tragic and happy coincidence of circumstances, separations and meetings formed the basis of the story about one of the most terrible and majestic pages of Russian history - the siege of Leningrad.
The military everyday life of the pilots and the difficult life of the townspeople are described vividly and accurately, without unnecessary pathos, which, perhaps, makes the book so sincere and convincing.
First published in 1955, Nikolai Chukovsky's novel was reprinted several times, and a film of the same name was made based on it. The illustrations by Nikolai Lavrukhin accompanying the text are executed with amazing, bordering on documentary, historical authenticity.
