When Uri Shulevitz was five years old, his family fled Warsaw to the USSR to escape the Nazis. Like other refugees from Poland, they were exiled by the Soviet government to a lumber camp in the Arkhangelsk region - the authorities saw them as a threat and potential spies - then allowed to go to Kazakhstan, where Uri spent two and a half years as a child. After the end of the war, the family moved home, but the Poles were hostile to Jews. The family's wanderings took them through the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, France, Israel and finally the United States. Uri Shulevitz wrote a memoir of his childhood. Of exhausting hunger and the support of strangers, of bombs and a passion for drawing, of luck and perseverance, of childhood games and wandering in freight cars. About how childhood is still childhood. About the fact that the love of parents is measured not by candy and toys. And vocation and talent will break through the hardships.
