The first book of "A Brief History of Soviet Science Fiction" chronicles the genre's early development in the USSR, from the Revolution to 1931. This was a unique time for Soviet literature: market mechanisms were in effect, censorship was only just gaining ground, and works were selected by reader votes. "Red Pinkerton" competed for reader attention with "Tarzan," science fiction writers offered insights into a wide variety of futures, explored the fourth dimension and parallel universes, and pitted armadas of warships against each other in orbit around Mars. Magazines created a unique visual style for science fiction stories, held competitions, and competed to see who could translate new foreign works the fastest.

In 1931, the publishing industry came under complete state control, leaving all the achievements of the early period behind a kind of ideological curtain. This fascinating period in the development of Soviet science fiction fell into the shadows, escaping the attention of most science fiction fans. With this book the author tries to fill this unfortunate gap.
