This book can be read in many different ways. Although the order of the chapters, as well as the selection of illustrations for each chapter are carefully thought out, the reader is not obliged to move in the same sequence. Each work of art tells its own, separate story, allowing for selective reading. Some readers may follow the established order and pace, gradually discovering for themselves the story of the appearance and use of different colors in art, consisting of many episodes. Each chapter is organized chronologically, each containing both historical material and examples from contemporary art. The general research setting can move from chapter to chapter, each time consistent with the color being discussed. The history of paint, artistic practice, and the technologies of resourcing, production, and distribution of materials are included in all chapters, as are the ever-changing ways in which color gives metaphysical, symbolic, and expressive meaning to society and the individual. Each chapter also has its own specific theme and new aspects of analysis that emerge as it unfolds. To make it easier to follow the complex plot, which is evolving and constantly transforming, the works of art in each chapter are arranged in chronological order.
