The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the subject of computer science, covering all its aspects, from the purely practical to the fully abstract. This approach to the study of basic concepts exposes students of any discipline, not necessarily computer science, to the breadth of the subject and provides an overview of the opportunities available to them in today's technocratic society. The material is presented from simple to complex, from concrete to abstract, and each topic covered leads directly to the next. Nevertheless, the individual chapters and sections of the book are quite independent and may well be regarded as independent units. Important strengths of the book are the presence of about 1000 assignments and exercises designed to deepen and consolidate understanding of the main concepts presented, a discussion of the ethical and legal aspects of the technologies covered that must be known in order to use them safely and responsibly, and a selection of public and social issues that encourage the reader to think about the connections between the material presented and the society in which they live. A highlight of this edition of the book is the move to use the Python language to record code examples and pseudo-code in the same style. About the Authors J.
