Drawing on little-known historical documents and research by a number of scholars, the author examines the development of the Baltic lands, now Latvia and Estonia, from the late 12th to the early 20th centuries. Particular attention is paid to the role of German knights and nobles, as well as the church, in the establishment of statehood in these regions. The influence of the various powers that dominated the Baltics at different periods is demonstrated. Of particular interest in this regard is the author's exploration of the Baltic Germans' position on the Russian Empire, particularly after its victory over the Swedes in the Great Northern War and the beginning of Peter the Great's reforms.
