"A Foreign Gaze" by O.F. Kudryavtsev is a fundamental study devoted to the formation of Russia's image in the Western tradition of the 9th–16th centuries. The author devotes particular attention to the period from the early 15th to the mid-16th centuries, when European cosmographers began to formulate ideas about the geographical and ethnopolitical realities of the Eastern European region. These ideas defined the foundation of the Western narrative about Russia, became an integral component of the image of the Russian world, and retained their influence until the early 21st century.

The work draws on rare Latin, Italian, and German sources: geographical treatises, chronicles, diplomatic reports, journalism, and correspondence. The book is richly illustrated with maps and engravings, including the unique Souley map (13th century)—the earliest surviving world map made in England.

The publication will be a valuable resource for historians, political scientists, cultural scholars, and anyone interested in the image of Russia in the context of the European tradition.
