Mikhail Andreevich Osorgin (real name Ilyin; 1878-1942) was a writer, journalist, and a leading figure in the Russian émigré community. Born in Perm, he graduated from the law faculty of Moscow University and worked in legal matters. He participated in the Moscow armed uprising of 1905, was arrested, and, released in 1906, went abroad, living in France and Italy. From 1907 to 1916, he kept a diary recording his impressions of Italy and also worked as a journalist for the publications Vestnik Evropy and Russkie Vedomosti. Some of his correspondence was included in the book Essays on Contemporary Italy, published in 1913. The Essays are imbued with Osorgin's love for the country where he spent "the best years of his youth," as the writer himself noted. The book provides a detailed discussion of many issues facing Italy in the early 20th century, covering social, political, and economic matters (healthcare, education, unemployment, the lives of peasants and urban dwellers, and the Italian Camorra). A significant portion of the "Essays" is devoted to Rome, as well as to Italian literature and art. This edition is published with a preface and commentary by philologist and translator Anna Vladislavovna Yampolskaya (Moscow).
