In 1898, in response to Japan's military claims, Russia adopted an extensive shipbuilding program "For the Needs of the Far East", according to which, among others, the construction of a whole series of identical squadron battleships began at St. Petersburg shipyards: "Borodino", "Emperor Alexander III", "Orel", "Prince Suvorov" and "Slava". All of them, with the exception of the last, are directly associated with the Battle of Tsushima on May 14-15, 1905, which, perhaps, is what still attracts the close attention of all those interested in the history of the Russian Navy. This publication is dedicated to one of them - the squadron battleship "Borodino". The first volume covers the events of 1897–1903 and provides a detailed account of the motives for adopting the “Far Eastern” program, the realities of state-owned shipbuilding in those years, and the selection of a prototype battleship for the Pacific Ocean squadron. Based on an array of archival documents, the construction of the battleship Borodino, which began in May 1899, is presented in detail. The facts and events that accompanied the construction of the ship in all subsequent years are described, both during its stay on the slipway and then at the embankment of the Franco-Russian Plants Society and on the “Galley Island”.
The second volume covers the events of the end of 1903–1904 and provides a detailed account of the completion of the battleship Borodino, its entry into service, its campaign as part of the 2nd Squadron of the Pacific Fleet to the Far East, and the tragic fate of the ship in the Battle of Tsushima.
The publication is accompanied by extensive illustrative material and technical documentation.
