The first and the only remaining history of the formation of doctrinal individualism, with economic theory as its theoretical basis and liberalism as its practical consequence. The starting point of individualism is the psychology of the individual and the ultimate goal is the protection of the individual.
The author begins with the emancipation of social philosophy from religion and theology (Hobbes and Mandeville), explores the process of formation of the core of the classical doctrine of individualism (physiocrats, Hume, Smith, Ricardo, Malthus) and the polishing of its various aspects (Dunoyer, Mill). Then A. Schatz analyzes the concepts of Bastiat, Tocqueville, Taine, Spencer and Christian thinkers. In the second half of the 19th century, the sudden triumph of democracy with an immature electoral mass demanded in France a combination of economic and political liberalism within the framework of the doctrine of liberal democracy. The final chapters are devoted to what the author believes to be the dead-end offshoots of individualism - anarchist and aristocratic. Individualism seeks to bring each individual to a state of his full development by teaching him that he is nothing and can do nothing without the help of others and that their happiness and prosperity leads to his happiness and prosperity, thus gradually extending the area to which his own interest extends. Individualism subordinates all social reform to respect for the two institutions of individual liberty and private property. This respect is justified by their social utility, since they condition a given spontaneous economic order.
