We do not wish to re-tell the entire history of our country - that is simply not possible. We seek to shed light on what we see as a betrayal of the ideas that underpinned its historic mission - because it seems to us that there is still hope of righting these wrongs before the 21st century finally takes hold. We are deeply concerned about the course the U.S. has taken recently. Why does our country place its military bases in every corner of the globe, the total number of which, according to some estimates, has exceeded a thousand? Why does the U.S. spend more money on its armed forces than all other countries combined? Why does our state still maintain a huge arsenal of nuclear weapons, most of which are on constant alert, even though, in fact, no country today poses an immediate threat to us? Why are a tiny minority of wealthy Americans allowed to exert such powerful influence on U.S. domestic and foreign policy and the media, while the broad masses of the people suffer from declining living standards and their voices in politics are heard less and less? Why do Americans have to put up with constant surveillance, government interference in their personal affairs, trampling of civil liberties and loss of privacy? This would have horrified the founding fathers and previous generations of Americans. Why is it that in our country those who are driven by greed and narrow-minded selfishness rule those who advocate such social values as kindness, generosity, compassion for others, common interests, and fidelity to national ideals? And this is only a small fraction of the questions we will ask on the pages of this book. Although we do not hope to find answers to all of them, we will endeavor to present the historical facts in such a way that readers will be able to delve independently into the study of the questions that interest them. There is little good in the history of the American Empire. But it must be told honestly and openly if the United States is ever to dare to undertake the fundamental reforms that will enable it to play a leading role in moving humanity forward, instead of hindering its progress in every possible way.
