The book contains a translation into Russian of the first European biography of Ivan IV the Terrible (1533-1584). Its author was the German pastor Paul Oderborn (1550-1644), a participant in the Livonian War. Oderborn's work was first published in Latin in Germany in 1585. It is considered one of the fundamental works on the creation of the "black legend" about the tyrant Ivan Vasilyevich. This legend painted the Russian ruler in the most negative light, as a mad despot and executioner.
Oderborn's book was repeatedly reprinted in Europe in collections about Russia for propaganda purposes. It is of interest as a literary monument, a historical work and an example of political propaganda of the Renaissance.
The publication is provided with a scholarly commentary, source articles and indexes. An essay on Oderborn's biography and an overview of his creative path are also published. For researchers, students and anyone interested in the history of Russia during the time of Ivan the Terrible and the history of relations between Russia and Europe.
