"If we assume that executed from life, a pictorial portrait was a kind of mirror of the depicted, then reproducing it engraving can be perceived as a mirror of the painting, and created by the engraved original pictorial image - a mirror engraving. Meanwhile, in the emblematics of the XVIII century mirror is one of the attributes of the allegory of truth". In her monograph, art historian Zalina Tetermazova examines Russian portrait prints from an unusual perspective. What is special to be seen in the mutual reflections of engraved and painted portraits? In search of an answer to this question, the author turns to an extensive corpus of materials from the second half of the XVIII century. The concept built in the book allows not only to reveal the dynamics of the artistic process, but also to make a historically more accurate representation of the portraits of the era and show how in the Russian Empire through the retranslation of portrait images created the image of a perfect man who thought himself both Russian and European. Zalina Tetermazova is a candidate of art history, curator of the collection of engraved and lithographed portraits in the State Historical Museum.
