In the middle of the 11th century, Ancient Rus was engulfed in an ecclesiastical and political crisis: in an effort to strengthen the position of the Russian Church, Prince Yaroslav appointed Metropolitan Hilarion to the episcopal see in Kyiv in 1051 without the consent of the Patriarch of Constantinople. This step was seen, on the one hand, as an attempt to strengthen the princely power's control over the Russian Church, and on the other, to weaken the influence of Constantinople on it.
Andrey Vinogradov's book is the first comprehensive study analyzing the history and consequences of this decision based on the few sources that have come down to us. The author pays attention to important contextual stories from the ecclesiastical and political history of pre-Mongol Rus - the emergence of new bishoprics and monasteries, the establishment of the cult of Saints Boris and Gleb, the composition of Russian narratives about the baptism of Prince Vladimir, the reaction of church leaders to the "Great Schism" of 1054 and the practice of re-consecrating churches.
The work presents both already known and the latest data related to the chronology, church construction and polemics of that time, and the events of ancient Russian history are placed in the context of the relationships between the Byzantine and Western European worlds.
Andrey Vinogradov is a historian and professor at the School of Historical Sciences at the National Research University Higher School of Economics.
