Y. A. Kulakovsky (1815-1919) was an outstanding Russian antiquarian, archaeologist and Byzantinist, who for the first time in Russian historiography created a generalizing work on the history of Byzantium in three volumes. In the first volume, after an extensive introduction, the history begins from the moment of the division of the Roman Empire in 395 to the end of the reign of Anastasius. In the work of Yu.A. Kulakovsky perfectly outlined foreign policy history and spiritual evolution of Byzantium, describes the life of the capital, the imperial court, quite a lot is said about church affairs and state institutions. According to the author, he "'leads the reader with his account into the very templum historiae byzantinae (temple of Byzantine history)'". The second volume of the trilogy is devoted to the dynasty of Justinian, one of the most prominent monarchs of the early Middle Ages. A brilliant military leader and reformer, Justinian managed to unite under the rule of Constantinople a significant part of the provinces of the Roman Empire. It is this period that marks the final transition from Roman traditions to the Byzantine style of government. The final volume of the trilogy is devoted to the reign of Emperor Heraclius I, the founder of a new dynasty under which Byzantium, losing territory in the course of years of Arab conquests and a protracted political crisis, was finally formalized as a Greek state in terms of language and national composition. This bright and talented work is addressed both to specialists and to all those interested in the history and culture of the state to which Russia owes so much in every respect.
