"Going into Politics and Coming Back" is a memoir by Sergei Stepashin, Prime Minister of Russia in 1999. By that time, his record included positions as director of the FSB, minister of justice, and minister of internal affairs. At the same time, he was never a classic "silovik". He came to the FSB (at that time the Federal Security Agency) from people's deputies, having served as chairman of the state commission for investigating the KGB. He left this post by his own decision after the death of hostages in Budyonnovsk. He was always open to the press. He joked about himself. When he, a colonel-general, was confirmed as prime minister, he said: "I'm not Pinochet, my last name is Stepashin." And to the surprise of his friends and opponents, he was approved by the State Duma for the high post from the first time, which was not often in those years. Until August 1999, Sergei Stepashin was considered one of the most realistic candidates for the presidency. Predictions did not come true. Does Stepashin regret it? Why did his political career turn out this way and not the other way around? Were there any actions in this career that the author of the memoirs repents? What was and remains the most important for him in politics? Stepashin does not have simple answers to these questions, but a sincere desire to think about them.
