A collection of articles by renowned philologist Alexander Dolinin is devoted to the prose of Vladimir Nabokov. In the first section, the author examines the writer's Russian-language novels and short stories in their diverse connections with Russian classical and contemporary literature. Much attention is devoted to his polemics with émigré and Soviet writers and critics—G. Adamovich, I. Bunin, Yu. Tynyanov, and others. The second section includes the author's contributions to several English-language works by Nabokov, including a previously unpublished article, "The Russian Substratum of 'Lolita.'" It demonstrates how Nabokov introduced a number of allusions to Russian literature and art into his American novel, creating the image of an all-powerful bilingual author playing with his unreliable narrator and with readers who remain oblivious to this play. The appendix to the book includes two annotated publications of archival materials: Nabokov’s review of three poetry collections published in Berlin in 1924, prepared together with G. M. Utgof, and his letters to G. P. Struve (1925–1935).
